This morning I am thankful to hear of the ongoing successful effort to rescue the 33 Chilean miners. Over the past few months, I have used this situation as a reference point for the number of times I become negative, in essence, about the goodness which abounds in my life. There are moments I have been tempted to complain about work or finances, housecleaning, or kids' arguing but keeping these coalminers in the fore-front of my consciousness called my attention to my personal selfishness and self-awareness that the very things I complain about are in fact incredible blessings. The worldwide collaborative effort extended during these past few months pays credence to the value of each and every life. Reflecting on their perilous situation reminds me of the abundance of blessings that exist within my life, blessings I take for granted. In my simple way of thinking, if I am not stuck hundreds of feet in the middle of the earth then I should be joyful in all of my daily life activities and sharing this joy with others. Even more surprising was the fact the men, hearing of the pending rescue, argued about who would be the first to leave---but not in a resentful way, but rather in a manner that insisted others go first. Essentially biblical, putting others before your own self. I can't wait to read more about the joyous reunions between children, fathers, spouses and loved ones.
I received via email a Thought for the Day which said: "Talk happiness. Happiness calls out responsive gladness in others. Join the great company of those who make the barren places of life fruitful with kindness. Your success and happiness lie in you. The great enduring realities are love and service. Resolve to keep happy and your joy will form an invincible host against difficulties." Helen Keller
My hope is that there will be an abundance of happiness in Chile today as teams continue to work together to reunite these families.
These are two links I shared with my kids about the miraculous effort to save the coalminers. Thank you for reading!
