My heart-rate is still elevated from a delightful evening shared with great women at the St. John's Lutheran Community Center. To have the privilege to present and discuss my passion of personal fitness with these hard-working women and devoted moms is both an honor and humbling. They were a kind audience, receptive to suggestions to consider the transformation that exercise presents in both a mental, physical, and spiritual nature. Mentally, the way we talk to ourselves, be it a positive or negative internal dialogue; as well as the way we perceive exercise (stress-reliever or time-consuming), affects our probability of taking action. If we accept that exercise will increase our energy, strengthen our bodies, improve our concentration, and prolong our lives then how can we not make time for it? Physically we have great evidence that exercise decreases the stress level cortisol, improves blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, and lessens the risk of heart attack, stroke and certain types of cancer. From a spiritual perspective we demonstrate value for our lives and bodies through exercise, to run the good race and to press onward toward our life's purpose.
We took our talk to the mats as, in Pilatespeak, "we wrapped our glutes and scooped our abs!" We discussed briefly helpful nutrition ideas, including the addition of flax-seed, fish oil and vitamin D to their diet to aid in energy, bone strength, and healthy circulation. The ideas shared from friends on Facebook were equally well received including the yourrealage.com, scheduling an appointment with yourself to exercise, and starting your day early with exercise. We identified friends, music, and even tv shows like The Biggest Loser as being helpful in maintaining a consistent exercise program. We all agreed that a little exercise while watching the shows is a great addition, for instance, sitting on an exercise ball, walking on the treadmill, or doing the Pilates side-kick series.
There is a sense of selfishness to me regarding the evening which is embarrassing. I had the privilege to share so much of my passion and self with these outstanding women yet I did not get the chance to learn more about them except through brief interjections during the presentation. They are strong and devoted women. They clearly value friendships and support one another taking the time to attend a community event even after a long day at work and kids at home. Many even brought their children to the program. With this type of strength, I am absolutely confident they will find methods to implement simple fitness strategies into their lives as a gift for themselves as well as and for their beautiful children. I left the church feeling inspired and motivated from being in the presence of these conscientious and caring women. Thank you St. John's Lutheran for befriending me this evening. Train rather than try. Action=Energy
