I just received notice on my Facebook page of new updates for the Cellcom Green Bay Half & Full Marathon to be held the weekend of May 14th. This race was the first time I actually put my money where my mouth was with respects to my training, hence it is near and dear to my heart. The event is well organized, provides up close and personal contact to historic Lambeau Field and attracts thousands of runners of all ages, sizes, and experience level. There will always be someone faster than you in this race and always someone slower...the only person you race against is yourself. Many people line the race to cheer, support, distribute water, and rally you forward. The last leg of the race you run to booming music directly through Lambeau stadium..it's awesome.
For you locals, it is a great way to prepare for the first half/full West Bend Marathon to be held in West Bend in September. My goal, if all goes as planned, would be to run a personal best at the Green Bay half marathon (better than 1:48) and then run my first marathon in West Bend a few months later...ugh... grueling. But my sister did it so now I have to..thanks Shannon.
If you are looking for a goal or resolution then please join me. It is my understanding that the YMCA will be forming some training programs to help people prepare. I am always looking for running partners---it sure eases the boredom and provides great companionship. If you need to commit in writing, then add your comments, set your goal, and get moving. You won't regret it. Take a look at the Cellcom website. They have comfortable accommodations, good restaurants, and the marathon itself provides many vendors marketing athletic wear, fitness info, running shoes...it's a great shopping venue! If nothing else, think of it as a weekend away with good friends who like a challenge. Thanks for reading!

Addendum: I just recalled one more detail. They used to combine a 5K, half, and full marathon. This year the 5K will be on Saturday. This is great for my brother-in-law from Raleigh who traveled here a year ago to run the half marathon with us, the gun sounded, he took off and within a few minutes realized he was sprinting past the field. He was surrounded by a bunch of young, short runners...at first he admired their ambition then Lambeau Field appeared in the distance which is not supposed to happen until the end of the race. Somehow, my incredibly smart (surgeon) brother-in-law had become entangled in the field of 5K runners. He was not alone...he crossed through back yards, businesses, and across curbs and medians with a half-dozen other runners to locate the half-marathon race already in session. The split in races this year should resolve that confusion. We still joke that his participation t-shirt should read," I Completed the Green Bay Half-Marathon (almost)...or roughly 12.7 miles."
