A lot can happen in 1 week! Last Saturday I was cruising the Caribbean on the Carnival ship Elation. Affectionately referred to as the "Redneck Riviera" we departed the Port of Mobile with 2000 Georgia Bulldogs, Bama Fans, Auburn Tigers, Florida State Seminoles and more. I reunited with friends from my Auburn college days, some of whom I had not seen for 15 years. As is true with deep friendships we barely missed a beat in re-establishing our sisterly bonds. All you care to eat buffets, sushi bars, dessert bars, plus full service housekeeping and pampering made us feel like queens.
We entertained a forgiving audience with a rendition of Sir Mix-A Lot's, "Baby Got Back." Half way through the song, in a moment of breathlessness and fatigue, it occurred to me that I was not adequately prepared for our First Annual Eisenbahn Marathon/Half , less than 1 week away. After a couple of interesting travel delays, a Thelma and Louise rental car experience, a quick shopping trip in Auburn,AL Walmart (War Eagle!), and a brief stay with my brother and sister-in-law in Atlanta...I finally found my way back to West Bend on Tuesday. Volunteer coordinators were in full-swing with final details to successfully sponsor a marathon.
In previous races I never considered the dedicated individuals behind the scenes. Those hard-workers who quietly organize water stands, bus routes, medical aide, and the ever important delivery of port-a-potties across a 26 mile stretch. Yesterday morning, at 7am, my husband received a hilarious call from Kraig Sadownikow, informing him he was making an early-morning "drop" of portable potties in Eden, Campbellsport, and Kewaskum. The Eisenbahn will be renown for having more portable potties than any race in history. Thank you to Arnold's Environmental Services for their generous contribution.
I made it to the Rivershores YMCA for a 5:45a.m. bus departure to a field in the middle of nowhere. My morning however was not as early as the full-marathoners whose bus left at 5a.m. or for my celebrity friend, "Russ," winner of the Washington County American Idol competition. Russ sang the Star Spangled Banner at 6am and again at 6:45a.m. for the 400+ participants. It was a surreal moment as our national anthem echoed across the expansive country-side in brilliant sunshine and to a grateful crowd of runners. Thanks Russ!
Three-weeks ago best friends Ron, Kraig, and Ben Gonring were playing Liar's Dice in northern Wisconsin. Ben is shown here in deep contemplation as he considers the prospect of reliving his glory days as a high school cross country star. Yes friends, just a mere three weeks ago this Madison grad and district attorney had not run a distance event since high school.
As is often the case, Ben was able to cajole his sisters and brother to join the fun as well. At the conclusion of the race, doubled-over in pain, cramps, and fatigue he slapped my husband on the back and said, "**** this." Ben is an inspiration to all of us who commit to events under the sheer torment of ridicule and peer pressure. Way to go Ben!
Auburn passes out waters while Dr. Gary Herdrich assists those who are passing out! There were so many caring, encouraging, generous medical personnel on hand to provide support to exhausted and dehydrated runners. Doctors from both Aurora and the West Bend Clinic, Dr. Maskala and Dr. Mosely to name a few, provided attention to runners throughout the 6 hour event. Thank you!
UW LaCrosse alum, swimmer, retired teacher and running superstar Wayne Bohlman fired the start gun for the race, navigated cross-roads to shout encouragement, and patiently identified each and every runner as they crossed the glorious finish line! Wayne is an inspiration and one of my personal heroes. He and his lovely wife Andie travel the world running races, climbing mountains, and sailing the seas. At any moment Wayne could successfully complete a triathalon, Ironman, or marathon in superb style. He keeps himself in great shape and provides countless hours of coaching to novice runners like me! The Bohlman's, as well as so many others at today's race, make me grateful to live in this community. Awesome people! Thanks Wayne!
Committed volunteer coordinators Terri Bodden and Kraig Sadownikow present awards at the West Bend Germanfest event. Both Terri and Kraig are avid runners. Terri, Fitness Coordinator at Pleasant Valley Tennis and Fitness has attained elite status with her marathon pace. Kraig works long hours with his American Design and Build firm, but years ago decided his health needed to become a priority. Through serious effort his weight is down 30 pounds and his fitness exemplary. Right now he is celebrating with Ron and others at a Germanfest tent, no doubt motivating and encouraging others and saluting a fabulous ending to a long-awaited event. Thank you Terri and Kraig for your energy and time!
The twenty-five year old Men's Marathon winner from Iowa, poses with his parents and unique ironworks 1st place trophy. Runners traveled from all over the country, including Texas, Pennsylvania, and California to participate in today's race. A sincere thank you to all the runners and volunteers that made today's race an outstanding community event.
