This is your sign to visit the new Green Dog Market on Main Street in West Bend! I was completely enchanted by the warmth of the space and the thoughtful selection or merchandise in this new local market. There is something so refreshing about shopping in an environment that embraces good taste and good health. Whether you are looking for fresh dairy (cheese, yogurts, A2 milk, sour cream etc), bison burgers or bacon burgers plus other farm fresh meats, gluten free dessert mixes, teas, coffees, toiletries, pet items, or beauty products, Green Dog Market is THE PLACE! The owner Stephanie is knowledgeable, wise, and gently encouraging to all of us on the journey of enhancing and supporting our health through our food choices. Some of the items in her store, for instance the peanut butter, she makes herself! She also specializes in organic and gluten free bakery items like cookies and scones. On her website she lists dozen of small businesses who are vendors cultivating items like brewed kombucha, fresh sauerkraut, and even fresh A-2 milk locally bottled. Please visit her website to learn more about her products and note her upcoming 3-part nutritional series being presented by Susan Wichman. www.greendogmarket.org/
On her website, Stephanie shares: Green Dog Market is more than just a grocery store. It is an experience you will want to repeat daily. It’s a place where your satisfaction is my priority. You will find items that are made with clean and most times, organic ingredients. I am confident in these products, and I am proud to have a relationship with the people that created them. Having a store built around integrity and trust is most important to me. Come in and let me know what I can do to be your grocer.
I am confident you will be inspired to prepare amazing meals or find the perfect gift to be savored. Fresh produce, meat, fish, sauces, baking essentials, wine, beauty needs, cleaning supplies, and so much more to come. I hope to see you often, the products will be ever-growing.
Cheers!
- Stef

I have visited Green Dog twice in the past two weeks in search of gift items for friends. In the first instance, a birthday, my friend is an avid tea drinker. Stephanie has unique tea "infusers" in which you can steep your loose leaf tea in this travel bottle with an ultrafine stainless steel removable infuser. Drinking tea is an invitation to slow down, to breathe and focus. It also re-directs my attention if I am in the mood for a little mindless snacking! My friend appreciated the personal gift and I included a home-made scone plus honey.
My visit today was to create a gift basket for dear friends who are experiencing a health crisis. One of Ron's best college friends invited him to golf in Madison this Monday. This long-time family friend is focused on moving beyond a difficult diagnosis and achieving full health and healing. Ron was thankfully able to rearrange his work schedule in order to play a round of golf and hopefully provide some laughter therapy to this awesome friend. I knew a visit to Green Dog would help me create a "Thinking of You" basket for him and his wife. There is so much to choose from at this market, even specialty coffees, maca powder and wine that it is challenging to narrow down the gift offering. Besides the popular Namaste brand of desserts, I elected a fresh hummus plus a creamy mushroom jack cheese served alongside sourdough crackers. In addition the White Oak Balsamic Vinaigrette seemed like something they would enjoy. I completed the basket with homemade cream cheese scones, one cream cheese with chocolate chips and the other an herb and cream cheese combination.
The spicy garlic sauerkraut and kombuchas I purchased for myself. I think my friends would actually love these small brewed and gut-friendly options, however I didn't want to overwhelm! I have been drinking less alcohol but have always enjoyed kombucha. Typically I purchase the Synergy brand either from Walmart or Sendik's Food Market. At one time in my life, I even tried brewing it from a starter scoby. I was pleased to see this handcrafted Nessalla Kombucha priced less than the Synergy brand. In addition, it has no added sugar and only 8 grams of total sugar. I find the Synergy brand has about 18 grams of sugar used for fermenting. Recently I absent-mindedly purchased the Costco brand without reading the ingredients label, it actually has 18 grams of ADDED sugar on top of what is used for fermentation. The Nessalla Lemongrass Ginger flavor was delicious and the Mango Turmeric is on-tap in the fridge. One of the secrets to maintaining focus to good health is crowding out the bad by adding in the good. In this case, a kombucha takes the place of wine or beer. And honestly, alcohol may not be "bad" for you personally, but for me it robs me of sleep, steals my energy, and tends to be pointless calories. Presently, my cocktails are mocktails like Kombucha or a freshly brewed tea.
When you need to re-charge your focus to your health, you may find a visit to Green Dog Market to be inspiring. I am currently registered to attend a 3-part nutritional workshop offered by Susan Wichman of West Bend. The camaraderie of other health enthusiasts helps support ones commitment to good health and good choices. Likewise, browsing Stef's store in which she also features local West Bend vendors like Honey Grove Apiaries, Tusol Wellness, and Kiki Milk may strengthen your understanding that nutritious foods can taste delicious and also be within one's budget. A snack Ron and I have often enjoyed is avocado with sauerkraut! Green Dog offers a variety of flavors traditionally fermented from a small company named Wise Goat. Sauerkraut offers an array of gut-friendly bacteria, it is a probiotic and promotes greater gut bacteria diversity and protects against inflammation.
I could keep singing the praises of this new local grocer but the best thing you can do is visit Green Dog Market in person. Stef welcomes face-to-face conversation and wants to provide products that meet your needs. In addition, she shops wisely from vendors and seeks to keep prices affordable for customers.
