"Higher than the mountains that I face
Stronger than the power of the grave
Constant through the trial and the change
One thing remains
One thing remains"
Stronger than the power of the grave
Constant through the trial and the change
One thing remains
One thing remains"
"I will lift my eyes to the Maker
Of the mountains I can't climb
I will lift my eyes to the Calmer
Of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes to the Healer
Of the hurt I hold inside
I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes to You"
Of the mountains I can't climb
I will lift my eyes to the Calmer
Of the oceans raging wild
I will lift my eyes to the Healer
Of the hurt I hold inside
I will lift my eyes, lift my eyes to You"
This has been a week of grief and sadness yet highlighted by poignant rays of light and goodness. As a person of faith I recognize that evil and darkness is as much a part of our world as goodness and truth. I believe that ultimately God's love has overcome this darkness which is why we jubilantly celebrate Christmas.
I was overwhelmed by the malicious massacre against young children and educators this week in Connecticut. Evil strikes me with grief and sorrow--I believe God suffers with us in this pain. I also believe that we can all be a light in the darkness. This light demonstrates itself by the strangers that assisted my friend out of a ditch in snowy slippery conditions; the coach that encourages and motivates his athletes; the snow boots donated to children in need. This love is also expressed to extreme in the teacher that gives the ultimate sacrifice to her children.
2 Corinthians 4:6 For God who said, "Let there be light in the darkness," has made us understand that the light is the brightness of the glory of God that is seen in Jesus.
We can all share this light to a world filled with pain and suffering.
There are no biblical promises about being free from pain on earth as Christians. Just the assurance that we are not alone.
2 Corinthians 4:8 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed and broken. We are perplexed, but we don't give up and quit. We are hunted down but God never abandons us. We get knocked down, but we get up and keep going.
Don't stop doing what is right. Look for light in the darkness. Be the light in the darkness.
1 Corinthians 13-14 Be on guard. Stand true to what you believe. Be courageous. Be strong. And everything you do, do with love.
Romans 8:35-39 Can anything separate us from God's love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or are hungry or cold or in danger or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can't, and life can't. The angels can't, and the demons can't. Our fears for today, and our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can't keep God's love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in our Lord.
The story of Christmas is that Love, represented as a tiny baby, ultimately wins and triumphs.
A few songs have played their refrain in my mind this week--even in my sleep. I thought I would share them with you too.
