Enjoyed teaching Pilates on the Ball this morning to my faithful Rivershores clientele. The exercise ball does a great job at helping participants utilize their core muscles while releasing tension in other parts of the body. It often challenges us more than mat class due to its unstable surface plus the fact we have not developed the brain/body connection that exists within our traditional Pilates mat program.
Pilates got me in the mood to then spend an hour listening to first graders read! Often a bit of a painstaking process when they work to sound out the words and it is all I can do to not just jump in and give them the answer. They did great and it is always a valuable use of my time.
From there I took my daughter to a half hour tennis lesson during her lunch/recess hour. Her teacher has been very supportive of us utilizing that time period rather than after school when life often seems to get more hectic. I love observing the process of her creating a new skill and at a young age. She has practiced since she was 5 and probably surpasses most of my ability now at 9 years old. So many tennis concepts are applicable to Pilates and vice versa. The importance of staying relaxed, being mindful of your breathing, shoulder rotation, hip rotation, maintaining a level stance which is partly a function of deep core strength all keep me nodding my head during the course of her lesson. Not to mention the "C" curve necessary for stroke preparation. I truly enjoy the process of watching her excel and appreciate the patience of her coach to keep drilling the basics and gradually tweaking moves to make her stroke more effective and powerful. A gratifying day and it is only 1pm. Enjoy it!
