Last night Ron surprised me with a trip to Giggles--a comedy club in Brookfield. We had been there once or twice over the years and always left with a huge smile. He knew I was desperately in need of off-color, politically incorrect, slapstick humor. Thank God they delivered. We heard Gains Kelly, a comedian from Oklahoma who immediately warmed up the crowd with his southern drawl followed by J.Jay Boyd, a New Yorker, who kept me in stitches. They had some great lines, none of which would appear half as funny within the blog, however in person the laughs constantly multiplied. Jay Boyd acknowledged that the closest he ever came to remotely doing a sit-up was when he heard a great joke that doubled him over in laughter. He even had a promotional t-shirt emblazoned with a guy trying to do a sit-up and the caption, "Body by J. Jay."
Research supports the positive effects of laughter and the importance of being around people who live with a lighthearted approach to life. Just like exercise, endorphins, our happy hormones, are created with laughter. I have used the analogy in my Pilates class, that if you have ever laughed like crazy and awaken the next morning with sore abdominals, the muscle group which generated the giant belly laugh, was the transverse abdominis. I am certain many from Giggles are waking up this morning with sore abdominals and maybe a headache!
I have heard the comedian Chris Barnes twice at Giggles. A couple of years ago he actually performed as a fundraiser for the West Bend Little League group. I went with a group of girlfriends and we laughed until we cried. Surprisingly, perhaps even miraculously, he is returning just in time for my birthday. I expect we will attend April 3rd and see if he can make me laugh at turning 39. He's a paid professional, I have faith. Giggles is a small venue, convenient, comfortable, only $10 cover plus a two drink minimum. We got a lot more for our money last night.
I will attach a You Tube video of Chris Barnes. Keep in mind, the setting of a comedy club puts you in the mood to laugh...Youtube does not quite have the same effect. I hope you can laugh with your friends, your family, your co-workers, and perhaps even kindly at yourself!
