We had a delightful Italian exchange student a few years ago and we continue to correspond with her family. Her mom shared an update with me recently and for these unprecedented times I wanted to preserve it.
Hi Tiffany
thanks for thinking of us during this unbelievable time!
I'm happy to hear you are living a " normal life", we wish we could do the same.
Lisa's university closed down almost 20 days ago as soon as the news about coronavirus had started to increase and only one week ago she started the on-line lessons which are not so easy as you can think because of the internet connection that doesn't always work properly.
Here all the shops, bars, restaurant, cinemas, theaters and all the kind of social places have been closed.
Only supermarkets and pharmacies can stay open , apart from some few places where you can still work.
The physioterapy center where I work is still open but most of the people are home till next April 3 .
I''ll be home from the next Monday to then.
Giancarlo can still work cause they sell necessary items but there are very few customers as nobody can move.
Most of the people are afraid to get infected cause here in my town ,but more in Milano or very near ,the situation is not so good.
Yesterday even the parks have been closed!!
Everybody has to stay home, you cannot drive unless you have a certificate who states you can move from a place to another for work , for necessity or for a medical examination.
To be honest we are not afraid of this virus, it's not lethal, I mean you can heal .
The big problem is another, if you get infected ,above all if you are old, you might need to recover in intensive unit care . If there are too many people infected there are not enough beds for the intensive unit care .
This way our hospitals can collapse as they already have .
Moreover if a "normal " unit gets infected then they have to isolate the unit , start the quarantine and move the patients elsewhere.
Dead people were old and with other diseases but now we all are overwhelmed by this, hospitals are full !!!
Unfortunately it's been necessary to end all sporting events, concerts, stop every kind of social life here cause the virus is increasing its contagion.
All I know is that the economic situation is collapsing even more than hospitals and who knows how much it will take to recover from this terrible situation
We are all well ,staying home is obviously very boring and time seems longer that on any other day.
Now I 've also heard that still Trump has started to take this thing more seriously, ( did he start to do swab tests ?) and all the flights from and to Europe have been cancelled and suspended .
I don't really know when people from Europe might fly to Usa again and above all if we can fly on next May .
Many places in New York city have started to close down, including schools although I guess it's spring break by now.
I'll start to check the situation one week befofe the flight date ,maybe the situation will calm down and we all could get back to normality again....we'll see.
Anyway I'll keep you updated on our plans ...this situation is like a movie, a disaster movie then!
A big hug to all of you.
Love
