Yesterday, I met my brother Mike and his fiance' Amy at the Milwaukee airport. They were bundled up from head to toe and happy to see the substantial snow cover. A few weeks ago, when they decided to visit, I had promised them a white Christmas. I am thankful the Snow Miser heard my plea.
There is no better gift for kids than to be dismissed early from school to be a part of a family reunion, particularly one involving the "fun" aunt and uncle. They love playing Wii and XBOX and get a kick out of watching "Home Alone" for the hundredth time. Amy and Mike are also relaxed, low-key, and quite tolerant. This was particularly notable when I turned onto Oak Street in West Bend and continued to circle 360 degrees! Amy, in the backseat, barely flinched..she assumed I was merely giving her the full panoramic view of the city.
Our guests had emphasized their desire to simply "lay around" on their vacation. They have been busy with work, school, and extensive wedding planning for their destination Key Largo wedding on January 10th. For the most part, outside of a memorable tennis engagement, we have provided them with their preferred itinerary...and some good food.
My sister and I have always been envious of my brother who typically eats in order to gain weight. You would think this time of year it would be easy for him but his desired weight gain is not the kind which comes from burgers, fries, and sweets. He looks to add protein and gain weight through the addition of muscle and avoids most sugary foods...a good example for all of us to follow.
Nonetheless, tradition demands that I make my special cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. As I recall even lean, mean Mike eats more than his share of these great breakfast buns. Years ago my mom innocently immortalized the recipe as "Tiffany's Sticky Buns" in our family cookbook. Now my kids always laugh and snicker when I ask them to help bake my famous sticky buns. These are not designed with the health conscious individual in mind, but rather for the cook who delights in sharing a sweet breakfast treat with friends and loved ones. These buns can be prepared the night before and will make your mouth water while they bake. Christmas only comes once a year and the same is true of my sticky buns. You have my permission to make the buns more personal and insert your own name into the title. Everybody will love your sweet, sticky buns!
Merry Christmas Friends. Thank you for reading.
