This past weekend contained all my favorite things. Friday afternoon I replaced Auburn at her tennis lesson while she, accompanied by her dad and brother, traveled with the high school basketball team to Beaver Dam for Round 2 of the regional finals. Ron's East Suns won the game while I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to take a lesson. Tennis lessons are something never to be taken for granted. As an adult it is easy to believe lessons are for kids, that we are too old to play, or we can't afford the time or expense. Sometimes we think we know enough already...maybe we think we know everything...so why put ourselves in a position that might make us feel awkward, uncoordinated, or weird? Those are the exact reasons we should play and learn. Getting out of our comfort zone encourages brain cells to replicate rather than die! Learning a new skill at any age improves physical and cognitive function. It is a privilege and a benefit to our brain and body. Thank you Pleasant Valley pros for your patience!
While Ron and the kids were in Beaver Dam I attended Dance Your Socks Off for Kim. A great night, I have heard estimates that more than 400 people attended. Liquid Crush, donated their entertainment services and businesses and friends donated silent auction items. The entire community opened their hearts and checkbooks with generosity. I had the good fortune of "winning" a tennis lesson and pretty crystal ear-rings at the silent auction.
A Hatha Yoga class at Yoga One Saturday morning left me feeling calm, centered and strong--all elements necessary for watching the Regional round 3 game in Slinger Saturday night. Unfortunately the boys did not find their groove until the 4th quarter; with the help of two of Ron's current sophomores they scored 24 points in the 4th. Too little too late but overall an outstanding season. Ron is particularly proud of this group of seniors because they were 1-19 as freshmen. When they came to Ron as sophomores he implemented his strategies and philosophies ("you can practice or you can suck") and they experienced the thrill of victory and three winning seasons. These boys and their families have become part of our family and we will miss them when they graduate.
Sunday morning I left the house at 6:30am to drive to Chicago for a TRX certification course at HiFi fitness. Much to my surprise my instructor was a good ole' southern boy from Atlanta, Georgia. His studio is located a mile away from my first employer, Piedmont Hospital, in the Buckhead area of Atlanta. An avid cyclist, fitness expert, and professional TRX instructor Derek Snowden exudes energy and enthusiasm with all things physical. Although I intuitively sensed we had met in a previous life, turns out it was only youtube videos. As I explored TRX options the past few months for training ideas I kept finding Derek...so I was a bit surprised to see him in person after months of web stalking!

The core options on the TRX trainer are endless--they are also challenging. Your body is constantly working to stabilize itself with your feet in the foot cradles (resist rotation), thus a basic move like a plank is significantly intensified.
The video below is far advanced...not something geared for "normal" folk, however on this snowy evening I appreciate that it is filmed on a cruise ship near the Dominican Republic. Derek is your cruise instructor. To learn more about TRX and Derek Snowden check out his website at www.witzlib.com
Thank you for reading. Please contact me if you wish to design a small group TRX class at Pleasant Valley Fitness. We can begin with the most basic foundational moves and progress accordingly all the way to swimsuit season!
